I found a really great quote from web designer Aaron Russell and I thought it was a perfect one to discuss with other designers.
“Every designers’ dirty little secret is that they copy other designers’ work. They see work they like, and they imitate it. Rather cheekily, they call this inspiration.”
The sad thing about the design industry is that everyone thinks they can do it. It is my belief that if you call yourself a designer, you must actually design something. That may be designing a piece that is not anywhere else, or putting together a room or space in your own style and taste. People pay big money to have someone design their home and they expect to have it be something that no one else has, so why then do designers look to other designers work to copy? If its inspiration they’re looking for they should be looking everywhere else but other designers finished work. Inspiration can come from nature, the city, the woods, the climate, EVERYTHING!
In art school we learn to represent our concept for design using images or items that are not an actual designers work. If there is a specific theme in a design we must dissect that word and its meaning to fully describe our design intent through something natural. This allows us to design something that is purely from our own minds, and not a replication of something we saw someone else do. This is what we as designers need to get back to. We need to start getting back to the real design from within ourselves. Designers need to have their own design style and look only within themselves to find their inspiration.
Heres another one I found: What are your thoughts?
What do you think? Are you a designer who really designs or just re-designs? Share your thoughts here and comment below.
Viva La France!

Since the 7th grade when I began to learn about the French Revolution I fell in love with the Palace of Versailles, Marie Antoinette, the clothing, art, architecture, and just everything French. I didn’t have a chance to go on my two trips to Europe so far but I’m glad because now my first visit will be with my husband and I’m so glad I get to share that with him. For today’s World post, I am taking you through France. First the countryside, then some palatial dwellings, and onto a few classic vintage French images. I hope this inspires you today.
Welcome to the Hotel Coronado

This one is a day late but I had to post about the majestic Hotel Del Coronado near San Diego, CA. This is a sweet spot for couples! HDC sits on its own island and is the main attraction. It was opened in 1888 and was the largest luxury resort hotel in the world. Today it continues to be in the top 10 best hotels of the world. First off, San Diego has incredible weather almost year round. There’s a cool sea breeze with a warm sun. The HDC has hosted to presidents, royalty and celebrities for years. Remember King Edward VIII who gave up the throne to his stuttering brother in the 30′s and married a divorcee? She was from Coronado and it’s speculated that they met at the hotel. Hmm..
The hotel also has a ghost. No really, that’s what they said! In 1892 a woman named Kate Morgan died there and is believed to be haunting the place. I’m assuming she’s nice or the hotel wouldn’t announce this bit of information. Eek!

Resto and Relaxation

What is more relaxing to the body than to enter a beautifully designed space that has character, atmosphere, mood, history, and can inspire discussions with those who enter? That’s why I love interior design and why I’m studying it, it makes me feel anew when I experience it and I want others to know that feeling too. I recently was given the amazing opportunity to work for a company that makes this happen and I jumped on board. A few years ago Restoration Hardware was not what it looks like now. Take a stroll through a newly designed store (Corte Madera, San Francisco, New York) and just be inspired. It’s out of this world. The store as a whole and all of their pieces have a signature look and its the look everyone wants now: bold, rustic, statement-making pieces. Resto has it, and then some. Here are a few of my favorite pictures from their design gallery.
All images from RestorationHardware.com.
I am in love with the Mayfair Steamer Secretary Trunk used as a home office! How amazing of an idea! It locks up for when you have people over and looks gorgeous open or closed. I’m saving up for that one! http://restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1617117

Thursday Thoughts:

I didn’t want this blog to be just about pictures, although that seems obvious for a design based blog. I wanted one day a week to have a place to share some of my thoughts too. And yeah I’ll add a picture to add to all the writing.. ha!
So I was thinking about what to share with all of you in my first post and it took me a long time to decide on something. Then I thought I’d write about something all bloggers think about, and everyone deals with differently which is this exact problem. How much of my personal life and personal thoughts do I want to share with the world? I mean, I started this blog and having an online presence to share my thoughts and design sense with the online world, so why am I hesitating every time I have to share something totally personal?
I’ve written my About Me page a million times and every time I’m thinking, “No one cares about that, why do I need to put that in there?” Then I read what other bloggers write about blogging or see how much they share of themselves and it gets pretty personal! I love it though. I like knowing who the people behind the images are. I feel like I have an idea of who that person is and I read the posts based on who they are and I enjoy them more. This makes me wonder, do people get a sense of who I am through my blog? Does it add to the experience for the reader or do you just care about the pretty pictures?
Well it’s going to be a goal of mine to slowly start sharing more about myself through my posts and designs. Hopefully within time my readers can know a little more about the person behind the screen.

I have found my collectors calling! I’ve always wanted to collect something but thought it over when I realized I need SPACE for that, which my husband will tell you, my things take up too much of it anyway! But I’ve just had one of those AHA! moments. I want to collect antique silverware! Oh how gorgeously vintage and chic! It will add so much character to your dinner table. Take a look at these beautiful utensils..

Natural Elements

When I’m feeling particularly bohemian and natural theres only one place I love to shop, and that’s the Anthropologie home store. Is it weird to say its actually calming to be in there? (Ha! Good Designers!) But really, from everything like their coffee tables to bedding to door knobs, its fabulously natural. Here I’m pairing some Anthropologie pieces with some vintage ones I think blend beautifully.
